The Colares UFO Flap
Issue #54: June 1983
In late 1977, the residents of Colares, a small island in the Amazon River delta of Brazil, experienced something terrifying. UFOs appeared nightly, hovering over homes and attacking residents with beams of light that left burns and puncture wounds.
The Brazilian Air Force investigated. Their findings have never been fully released. But what has emerged suggests one of the most disturbing UFO events on record.
The Attacks
Beginning in October 1977, residents of Colares reported nightly visitations by strange lights. The objects came in various shapes: spheres, cylinders, and more complex forms. They moved silently and appeared to be under intelligent control.
The lights did not merely observe. They attacked.
Witnesses described beams of light that struck people in their homes. The beams caused burning sensations, left puncture marks, and in some cases drew blood. Victims reported feeling paralysed, drained, and sick for days afterward.
The attacks were so frequent and so disturbing that residents took to lighting bonfires, firing guns into the air, and banging pots and pans to drive the objects away. Many fled the island entirely.
Local hospitals treated dozens of patients for burns, puncture wounds, and unexplained symptoms. The injuries were real and documented.
Operation Saucer
The Brazilian Air Force launched an investigation known as “Operação Prato” (Operation Saucer) in late 1977. A team of military personnel arrived on Colares with cameras, scientific equipment, and orders to document the phenomena.
For several months, the team photographed and filmed the objects. They collected witness testimony. They examined physical evidence. They took the matter seriously.
The investigation concluded in 1978. The findings were classified.
The Leaked Information
In subsequent years, fragments of the investigation have emerged:
Photographs: Genuine military photographs of luminous objects over Colares have been released. They show structured objects unlike any known aircraft.
Witness Interviews: Military personnel recorded hundreds of witness accounts. The consistency across witnesses is remarkable.
Medical Reports: Documentation of injuries was preserved. The wounds matched no known natural cause.
Investigator Testimony: Some members of the Operation Saucer team have spoken privately to researchers. They describe objects that defied explanation and experiences that disturbed even hardened military personnel. Colonel Uyrangê Hollanda, who led the investigation, has been reluctant to speak on the record, but sources close to him confirm that what the team witnessed shook them deeply.
The Injuries
The physical effects on victims were documented in detail:
- Circular burns approximately the size of coins
- Puncture marks, as though from needles
- Symptoms similar to radiation exposure: hair loss, fatigue, weakness
- Psychological trauma, including ongoing fear and anxiety
Several victims died in the months following their attacks, though direct causation was never established.
The injuries distinguish Colares from most UFO cases. This was not mere observation but apparent assault.
Theories
What attacked the residents of Colares?
Extraterrestrial Visitors: The most straightforward interpretation holds that alien craft were conducting operations, including the collection of biological material from human subjects.
Secret Military Technology: Some researchers suggest the attacks were tests of secret weaponry, perhaps by Brazilian or foreign military forces.
Mass Hysteria: Sceptics propose that fear and suggestion created the impression of attacks. But this fails to explain the documented injuries and the military’s serious investigation.
Unknown Natural Phenomena: Some unusual atmospheric or geological phenomenon might have caused the lights and injuries. But no known phenomenon matches the observations.
The Suppression
The Brazilian government has never fully released the Operation Saucer files. Documents have been lost, destroyed, or remain classified.
Why suppress information about a UFO investigation from six years ago?
If the findings were mundane, there would be no reason for secrecy. If they confirmed something extraordinary, the implications might be considered too disturbing for public release.
The silence speaks loudly.
Conclusion
Colares remains one of the most disturbing UFO cases on record. An entire community was terrorised. People were injured. The military investigated and confirmed that something extraordinary was occurring.
Yet the truth remains hidden. The files remain classified. The victims have been largely forgotten.
What descended on Colares in 1977? What attacked those Brazilian villagers with beams of light? And what did the military learn that they refuse to share?
The questions persist. The answers remain locked away.
